Dr. Alexander Vorontsov is the head of the Department of Korean and Mongolian Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In this position, he heads the leading Russian state expert institution on the Korean Studies. He is also an associate professor at the MGIMO University (Moscow State Institute of International Relations) Dr. Vorontsov is also the Professor at the Russian Military Science Academy.

Воронцов, Заведующий отделом Кореи и Монголии Института востоковедения РАНHe repeatedly takes part at the “track 1.5″ and «track 2» conferences dealing with the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and East Asia. Dr. Vorontsov served as the second secretary in the Russian Federation’s Embassy in Pyongyang from 2000 to 2002. He speaks fluent English and Korean. Dr. Vorontsov actively writes on Korea and is the member of the editorial board of the Unity Newsletter an academic research publication on Korea, the Russian-Korean news agency RUSKOR, Moscow Press magazine, PIR Center’s expert advisory board, Moscow, Russian Federation.
Dr. Vorontsov is the First Deputy Chairman of the Society for Friendship and Cultural Relations between the Russian Federation and the DPRK. He was awarded the «Friendship» medal and the «Friendship» order of the second degree by the DPRK. He was a visiting professor at the Hanguk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul from 1998 to 2000; at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan in 2009, 2012 and 2020, at the Akita International University, Japan in 2015, member of faculty of Yonsei University International Summer School in Seoul in 2010; visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies in Washington D.C. in 2005-2006, graduated Asia Pacific-Center for Security Studies Executive Courses in Honolulu in 2005. Alexander Vorontsov holds a Ph.D. in history from the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the Russian delegation at Russia-DPRK, Russia-RoK Intergovernmental Commission dealing with trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation. Dr. Vorontsov studied at Moscow State University and Pyongyang Kim Il Sung University.
